pages more organized! Until them just check from the pages below! In LDS
pack's we start the cub scout program at Wolf's. So I don't include any
Tiger items, sorry. |
For LDS Packs, they need to do
do some of the items in the Faith In God
program to earn their Religious Knot
Baloo's
Bugle is one of the best places to help you in cub scouts, it has information
for each month and the monthly theme.

My Thoughts on the Cub Program |
|
I have spent many hours in Cubs and Primary, so I have come up with many different thing, I was hoping that someone else could use and enjoy some of our idea's! Or at least give you some idea's!
We have a Cub Book that we give to each boy as they enter the cub program, it is in a 3 ring white binder, we use the kind that has the plastic sheet on the front that you can put a paper in it to make the front cover, when I give it to them the top one is for cubs, but behind it is the one for Boy Scouts, when they enter the Boy Scout program at 11 they can change the front, on the side it say's Scouts and at the bottom is their name.
This book is really good for people who no nothing about the Scout program, it gives the basic steps of the cub and scout programs, and some helps, also included is a copy of the record sheet for each den in the cub part, so the parents can see it and use it if they want!
In the back of the book I put an extra pocket and a plastic baseball card holders sheet, this is just the right size to hold the cards that the pins and badges come on, this is a great way to keep record and proof of receiving these awards.
This is the one book they need for all their years in Scouts, the can keep all the info they need, papers they get, and have it all in one place. I have included even a basic Eagle Project Packet.
If you have any questions or ideas of things to add to this, please E-mail
me! Thanks

Center-piece decorations for the blue and gold banquet |
Hello
folks at The Idea Door,
I wanted to send a note
to say I used some of the ideas from your very helpful
website. We are first time scout parents and I was in
charge of center-piece decorations for the blue and gold
banquet. I read through so much info on the web and I kept
coming back to the candy-wrapper idea, but with a twist.
Somewhere, maybe your site, I saw something called
"pots of blue and gold" and from somewhere
else....party poppers {I had been saving paper towel rolls}
so I think I combined two ideas. It was real important that
the boys do the craft, I mean that's the whole point, so I
chose something that was simple for them. So with a
little craftiness, your website's inspiration and the help
of 11 little hyper boys {I mean hyper but happy :) the "arts
and crafts" part went well.
I have a pic to
share.....the clip art that we printed out come from yet
another very helpful site..... logo/recourses from Kevin
Doyle/gilwell.com. I printed out the artwork/clip art and
cut them in square shapes so the boys could just color
and glue them to the buckets / or "pots" in whatever
pattern they wanted to.
Each boy made his own.
We used the candy wrapper to go around the tissue paper
covered paper towel rolls after we filled them with goodies.
Each boy wrote his name on his own creation. In the roll
"party popper" we hid small pieces of candy and a small
party favor {like a spinning top or small plastic harmonica}
then twisted the ends and tied with either blue or yellow
curling ribbon. When done we put it in the "pot" then we
will add a few pieces of those chocolate gold coins candy to
each. Each table will have a few of these in the center.
The families get to take them home. The little buckets {
.97 cents - wal-mart floral dept} can be re-used at the
boys home for any number of purposes.
all in all very fun to
make.
Thank you so much for the
inspiration,

Cub Tracking Sheets
(PDF file) from Patti D. |
During the time I was in cubs I never found a record sheet that I liked for each den
that I could record everything the way I liked, so I made my own, sorry they
are so hard to see, but you can download these in to Microsoft Works and see
if you like them. I did not make them with Microsoft works, since I do not like
that program, but I cut and pasted them into that program so more could open it.
So you will not be able to make any changes to these.
I would make a copy of each boys sheet every couple of months and give it to the
parents, that way the parents could see how much the boy had done and how much
he still had to do , I would, highlight the stuff he still needed to do, it seems to work well, the parents would see how close the boy was to getting something done and would push a little harder!
The ones that I made are out dated, but
Patti D. has let me place hers on this site for everyone to use! Thanks Patti

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT |
|
Since its origin, the Scouting program has been
an educational experience concerned with values. In 1910, the first
activities for Scouts were designed to build character, physical fitness,
practical skills, and service. These elements were part of the original
Cub Scout program and continue to be part of Cub Scouting today
Character development should extend into every
aspect of a boy's life. Character development should also extend into
every aspect of Cub Scouting. Cub Scout leaders should strive to use Cub
Scouting's 12 core values throughout all elements of the
program—service projects, ceremonies, games, skits, songs, crafts, and all
the other activities enjoyed at den and pack meetings
- Citizenship: Contributing
service and showing responsibility to local, state, and national
communities.
- Compassion: Being kind
and considerate, and showing concern for the well-being of others.
- Cooperation: Being helpful
and working together with others toward a common goal
- Courage: Being brave
and doing what is right regardless of our fears, the difficulties,
or the consequences.
- Faith: Having inner strength
and confidence based on our trust in God.
- Health and Fitness: Being
personally committed to keeping our minds and bodies clean
and fit.
|
- Honesty: Telling the truth and
being worthy of trust.
- Perseverance: Sticking with
something and not giving up, even if it is difficult.
- Positive Attitude: Being
cheerful and setting our minds to look for and find the best in
all situations.
- Resourcefulness: Using human
and other resources to their fullest.
- Respect: Showing regard for
the worth of something or someone.
- Responsibility: Fulfilling our
duty to God, country, other people, and ourselves.

There are several special events planned each year
for the Cub Scouts. These events are exciting for the boys and require
special preparation on the part of the Den and Pack Leaders, Committee
Members and parents. Some of these events are:
This fun filled event is normally held on a
Saturday morning in January. Cub Scouts work with their parents to
craft hand carved blocks of wood into racing cars (from a kit). These
cars are raced on a track against other cars within the Pack. Awards
are given on a Pack and Den basis. A committee is formed in advance of
this event to plan and prepare for this fun event.
The Blue and Gold Banquet is a celebration of the
anniversary of Cub Scouting and is named after the symbolic colors of
Cub Scouting. It is held in February and is the biggest pageant of the
Scouting year. A special committee is formed a few months in advance of
the event and plans the meeting. You will be asked to assist in
planning the event and participating in the banquet. This event is
always a highlight of the boys’ Cub Scout experience.
This is another extremely fun event for the boys.
The boys form a block of wood into a boat, decorate it, and race the
other members of the Pack. The race is performed by setting the boat in
water filled rain gutters where boys blow air through a straw into the
sail of the boat to get it to move.
The space derby is where the boys are given kits to
build a rubber band- powered rocket. The boy’s race the rockets by
hanging them from a wire and letting the wind-up propeller propel them
forward. The rockets are made of either Styrofoam or balsa wood. The
race is informal and just for fun – there is no timing or trophies.
The Cub Scout
Bike Rodeo is an exciting chance for Cub Scouts to learn about bicycling
safety and the thrill of bike riding, by navigating their way through a
series of “challenges.” They will also learn about bike safety,
maintenance and repair, and expressing themselves through the “Chalk
Talk.”
In addition to
regular Pack meetings and activities, the Pack sponsors special projects
and events through out the year. These include church and community
service projects (Scouting for Food, Canyon picnic area cleanup), and
outdoor activities (rocket launch, summer picnic and swim outing, family
campout, Bicycle Rodeo, etc.).

Bike rodeo |
These are my thought from an email about Bike Rodeo's!
Well is has been a while since I have thought about some cub stuff like these things, lets see, we did have a bike rodeo about 5 years ago, when I was still in cubs, lets see, it was pretty plain, we just used side walk chalk and orange cones, and made a course for the boys to go through in the parking lot, we talked to them about bike safety and taking care of their bikes, we had a fireman in the ward and he came and talked about safety!
Of course all the boys brought there bikes, and we had a few extra one's in case someone forgot their bike or did not have one.
You could make up a "bike drivers license" (SEE BELOW) with safety rules on them, their name, the date, and then laminate them and give them to the boys.
The course can be a place where they practice safety, like stop signs, turns, riding in the bike lanes etc. I could make up a bike license, that might be cool to have!
The police or fire department I bet would have some stickers for their bikes, and maybe you could see about getting everyone's bikes licensed through the city! I wonder what the cost for that is??? At least you could pass out the form to them to get a license.

Cub
Wallet Card |
|
Here is a card that you can hand out to each boy, it is the size of a business card, and will fit in there wallet. I laminates them to help them last longer. One side is the cub handshake, salute and
sign, and on the other side is the Cub Scout Motto and Promise. you can print them off on card stock and cut them out, I had to save them in two different files, but you just need to print out when side and then turn it over and print the other file!

Pocketknife Pledge
I was looking through
my son’s bear book and saw this pledge and thought it would make a cute
wallet card. It could also go in their
books, or if they have a pocket knife pouch. THANKS Holly C. for
sharing this!

Uniform Inspection Award |
|
This is a candy bar wrapper I put on a chocolate candy bar, when the boys were dressed in there uniform right! Click on the picture to see it bigger. You can right click on the picture and save it and place it in your own program and then print it out, it will look
a lot better that way and then you can fit it to your paper. Fit it to the left of the paper and you will need to cut off about an 1 -1/4 inches off the right side, you will just have to play around with this to make it fit! Sorry, when I copied it over it changed the size
a little, just use it as clipart for a candy bar wrapper and measure the candy bar! |

ARROW OF LIGHT! |
We give each boy this certificate in a frame, along with
an arrow, when they receive there Arrow of Light.
When they move on to 11 year old scouts we give them
a compass,
"To help them fellow their way through Scouts"
When the boys go on to Boy Scouts we give them a compass, we tell them this will help them along the path to Eagle

When
you open this file you will see that it is not a full page and it has
lines around two sides of it, that is because it is sized to be cut and
placed in a frame.

PINE
WOOD DERBY |
|
The Pine Wood Derby is one of the funniest events in our Pack, we do it up "right"!! We decorate like you are at a car race, with the black and white flags etc. We have hot dogs, popcorn, nachos. sno-cone we only have water to drink,
of course they are free. This way we can start earlier since we provide dinner, and it keeps the atmosphere light and fun. The little brothers and sisters love it, since they can eat all night long!
We try to have the Pine Wood derby outside in the church parking lots, (depending on weather, see we can do that we live in AZ and in March it is great weather) it helps keep the mess out of the hallways and all over the church, clean up is
a lot easier! If you have to hold it inside, may I suggest you block all but one door,
(of course not in a permanent way, just some paper across the doors saying use other doors, so they can still be used for emergency's) the one door you have open can be the one that leads to the bathroom and kitchen, block off the hallways from just pass the bathroom and just pass the kitchen in hopes kids will not run around the building, this will also help and keep popcorn mess in only one area.
When each boy checks in their car, we give them a pit pass, we number it, the same number there car is,
and we can use this number in the line up, instead of names, it makes it easier! The boys love these,
I lamented all of them, punched a hole and put yarn through, they would where them around there neck!
No one is allowed in the "Pit" without their pit pass, it helps keep out unwanted fathers and kids! |

Here are some
great ideas people shared with us |
| This
GREAT idea came from Sara
Our pack
was having problems with parental attendance. I went to the scout shop
and bought the yellow and blue cub scout stickers. I then made up the
following poem with the dates of our pack meetings for the rest of the
year and printed it out on yellow paper. I glued slightly larger blue
paper behind the yellow paper (to make a border) and stapled the stickers
to the poem. It turned out really cute and was such a hit with parents I
thought I would send the idea around.
Cub Scout stickers just for you
They are the colors yellow and blue
On your calendar you should place
To help remind you just in case!
Once a month we get together
Even if we have bad weather
We have a Meeting as a Pack
And afterwards we have a snack.
We need our parents very much
To attend and keep in touch.
Please come join us for the fun
And to help support your son!
|
| Also
another idea about getting parents to come to Pack Meeting
was
posted but with name, but it is good also!
Pack Meeting
attendance can get low for so many reasons. We found that we increased
attendance by giving parents an assignment (even as simple as being the
greeter at the door), sending home monthly newsletters/calendars with the
boys, personally inviting parents periodically and reminding them of the
purpose of Pack Meetings, and keeping in touch as much as possible. I know
that as a parent of a new cub scout, I had no understanding of what pack
meetings were for and just thought it was another meeting for the boys. I
had no idea that my attendance was so important. I was given a small
assignment for each meeting and that helped me remember to come. We all
get busy, and sometimes we just forget! |
|
Still another
adornment that is popular with Cub Scout boys is what is known as the
“Patch” vest(also known as the “Brag” vest). This is a red vest that is
used to hold all of the patches the boy received during his time in Cub
Scouts (Note – this vest in NOT considered a part of the official Cub
uniform). These patches could be from any sort of special event (i.e.
Jamboree, etc.). These vests can be especially fun for the boys when they
go to special events where they can show off their patches to the other
boys. The decision to purchase a vest (or make the vest), and attach the
patches, is left up to the parents of the child. The vest pattern may be
available from another Den Leader or Advancement Chairman (ask around). |
