  Family Home Evening

Helps and Ideas

"We call upon parents to devote their best efforts to the teaching and rearing of their children in gospel principles which will keep them close to the Church. The home is the basis of a righteous life, and no other instrumentality can take its place or fulfill its essential functions in carrying forward this God-given responsibility. We counsel parents and children to give highest priority to family prayer, family home evening, gospel study and instruction, and wholesome family activities."
(First Presidency letter, 11 February 1999 Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas S. Monson, and James E. Faust)

The 161 pictures in this kit depict scripture or Church history stories, provide portraits of the Presidents of the Church, or illustrate gospel principles in action. The texts on the back of the pictures tell the stories or provide information about the pictures and usually give several scripture references for additional study.

A great idea is to use these pictures to teach, I have placed a picture in a sheet protect with a magnet on the back, that way I can change the picture, we talk about the picture and then hang it up on the fridge for a few days, it helps them remember about what we talked about.

Quotes about Reading the Book of Mormon

“There is a book [that] we need to study daily, … namely the Book of Mormon. I love that book. …

“I bless you with increased understanding of the Book of Mormon. I promise you that. … if we will daily sup from its pages and abide by its precepts, God will pour out upon each child of Zion and the Church a blessing hitherto unknown.”

Ezra Taft Benson (Ensign, May 1986, page 78.)

“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”

Joseph Smith (History of the Church 4:461)

“And so, I counsel you, my beloved brothers and sisters and friends everywhere, to make reading in the Book of Mormon a few minutes each day a lifelong practice.”

Marion G. Romney, as quoted by President Ezra Taft Benson (Ensign, May 1986, page 6.)

“It was by faith that this marvelous record of ancient peoples, this testament which we call the Book of Mormon, was brought forth by the gift and power of God.”

Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, November 1983, page 52.)

“The holy scriptures are for children, to fill their eager minds with sacred truth.”

Thomas S. Monson (Ensign, Dec. 1985, page 48.)

“[The Book of Mormon] will give you a greater desire to live in harmony with … gospel teachings.”

Howard W. Hunter (Ensign, May 1983, page 16.)

“And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.”

Moroni 10:4 [Moro. 10:4]

“Like all books of profound value, [the Book of Mormon] is not casual reading. But if you persist, I assure you that it will be the most rewarding book you have ever set your mind to read.”

Boyd K. Packer (Ensign, May 1986, page 59.)

Thanks to A. Simpson for sharing this great idea!!!

Cut out magazine pictures or hand drawn pictures of animals and tape them up around the house. Share the story of Noahs ark with young children. Give your children binoculars (made of two toilet paper tubes) and have them be Noah searching for the animals to put on the ark.

2006 Oct Conference Summary

For Primary I made a really brief summary of the Oct 06 Conf talks (minus priesthood) and then also illustrated each of the topics.  It would be useful to use for family nights, primary sharing time, talks or lessons on conf etc..

I hope some of you can benefit from this. Crystal from Utah (THANKS FOR SHARING CRYSTAL)

— SUMMARIES OF TALKS —

President Gordon B. Hinckley"Circumstances change, but our message does not change. We bear testimony to the world that the heavens have been opened, that God our eternal Father, and his son, the risen Lord, have appeared and spoken."

"In the on-working of this great cause, increased faith is what we most need. Without it the work would stagnate."

We are grateful, We wish that there were peace

President James E. Faust "The blessings of discipleship are readily available to all who are willing to pay the price."

Elder Dallin H. Oaks "The Savior said: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Elder M. Russell Ballard Strive to keep life in proper balance when serving the Lord. "As mortals, we simply cannot do everything at once. Therefore we must do all things in wisdom and order."

Elder David S. Baxter Latter-day Saints can feel the Savior's love by exercising faith, living a life of service and standing steady through adversity.

Elder Richard H. Winkel Attending the temple will bring families together both in this life and in the next.

Elder Paul B. Pieper First-generation members make up more than half the overall membership of the church. "Seemingly small, insignificant decisions will impact past and future generations, as well as your own life."

Elder Robert C. Oaks "We can only grow in faith if we are willing to wait patiently for God's purposes and patterns to unfold in our lives, on his timetable."

Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin "Each of us will have our own Fridays — those days when the universe itself seems shattered and the shards of our world lie littered about us in pieces. We will all experience those broken times where it seems we can never be put together again. We will all have our Fridays. But I testify to you in the name of the one who conquered death — Sunday will come."

Elder Richard G. Scott Those who anchor themselves to correct principles and laws ensure their own safety and success in life. "It is your understanding and application of the laws of God that will give your life glorious purpose as you ascend and conquer the difficulties of life."

Elder Robert D. Hales "The holy scriptures are the word of God given to us for our salvation. The scriptures are essential in receiving a testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel."

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf "The testimony of the truthfulness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ is the most powerful motivating force in our lives." "A testimony is a most precious possession because it is not acquired by logic or reason alone, it cannot be purchased with earthly possessions, and it cannot be given as a present or inherited from our ancestors. We cannot depend on the testimonies of other people. We need to know for ourselves."

Elder Shayne M. Bowen The scriptures teach about the Atonement of Christ, which is available to every person.   Like the landfill, which "requires dedicated work and attention, laboriously applying layer after layer of fill to reclaim the low lying ground, our lives also require the same vigilance, continually applying layer after layer of the healing gift of repentance."
Elder Daniel L. Johnson A "lack of compliance" with the law of tithing is "not to be taken lightly and can not only seriously impair our spiritual growth and development but can also limit the physical and temporal blessings that we could otherwise enjoy."

Sister Elaine S. Dalton President Hinckley counseled Sister Dalton and her husband when they were married to “Always live in such a way that when you need the Lord's blessings, you can call upon Him and receive them because you are worthy."

President Thomas S. Monson Mortality is a time of testing and proving. It brings challenges and difficulties. "These can break us, and the surface of our souls may crack and crumble — that is, if our foundations of faith, or testimonies of truth, are not deeply imbedded within us." Three guidelines can help in building a strong foundation: prayer, scripture study and service.

Elder L. Tom Perry "Our Eternal Father did not send us to earth on an aimless, meaningless journey. He provided for us a plan to follow." "Only through the gift of the Atonement and our obedience to the gospel can we return and live with God once again."

Elder Russell M. Nelson Latter-day Saints "share an enormous responsibility" to do what the Lord wants them to do. This includes the gathering of scattered Israel, which is of unique importance in God's eternal plan. Through temple and missionary work, church members are part of the gathering of Israel. All people can "come unto Christ" and "have equal claim upon the blessings of the Lord."

Bishop Richard C. Edgley "Sadly, some of the greatest missing values in today's world are honesty and integrity." "Honesty should be among the most fundamental values that govern our everyday living. When we are true to the sacred principles of honesty and integrity, we are true to the faith and we are true to ourselves."

Elder Anthony D. Perkins "Childlike faith in the perfect love of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ   Five ways are suggested to "more fully feel the tender love of God." First, people can see themselves as children of a loving Father in Heaven. Second, church members should also place their burdens on Jesus Christ, and third, forgive themselves of sins and imperfections. Fourth, sustain hope of eternal life. And fifth, find joy each day.

Sister Margaret S. Lifferth The scriptures and our prophets are clear about what to teach our children." "Knowing that we teach of Christ and his gospel, how do we do it? Begin by following the counsel of our prophets and making time in our homes for family prayer, scripture study and family home evening.

President Boyd K. Packer "We speak of the church as our refuge, our defense. There is safety and protection in the church. It centers in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Latter-day Saints learn to look within themselves to see the redeeming power of the Savior of all mankind. The principles of the gospel taught in the church and learned from the scriptures become a guide for each of us individually and for our families."

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland Prophets of God walk on the earth today. "It is no trivial matter for this church to declare to the world prophecy, seership, and revelation, but we do declare it. It is true light shining in a dark world, and it shines from these proceedings."

Elder David A. Bednar "To be offended is a choice we make; it is not a condition inflicted or imposed upon us by someone or something else." Latter-day Saints must follow the example of Christ and love their enemies. The Lord has the power to help those who seek Him overcome feelings of hurt or offense.

Elder Craig A. Cardon "So it is that the priesthood, through the workings of the spirit, moves individuals closer to God through ordination, ordinances, and refinement of individual natures, thus affording God's children the opportunity to become like him and live eternally in his presence — a work more glorious than moving mountains."

Elder Don R. Clarke How do Latter-day Saints become instruments in God's hands? "First of all, we must have love for God's children."

Elder Keith R. Edwards The purpose of our suffering is not always apparent at the time.
"As we are called upon to endure suffering, sometimes inflicted upon us intentionally or negligently, we are put in a unique position—if we choose, we may be allowed to have new awareness of the suffering of the son of God."   The scriptures tell the stories of several men and women who always kept their focus on Christ, no matter how bad their situation was. People like Abraham, who lost the land of his inheritance and was commanded to sacrifice his son, Isaac; or Nephi, who was bound for four days by his brothers on a ship coming to the promised land. Despite his suffering, Nephi "did look unto God and did praise him all the day long and did not murmur."

Elder Larry W. Gibbons "The only true security in life is living the commandments."
"What a great thing it is to decide once and for all, early in life, what you will do and what you will not do in regards to honesty, modesty, chastity, the Word of Wisdom, and temple marriage."

Brother A. Roger Merrill Latter-day Saints often find themselves spiritually passive at church meetings, thinking, "Here I am, now inspire me."
"When we focus instead on seeking and receiving the spirit, we become less concerned about a teacher or speaker holding our attention and more concerned about giving our attention to the spirit."

Here is one that you can just print off, it is almost the same, we could not get this exact one so that you can print it off, but this one is close. There are 4 on a page! But it does not have a place for the hearts.

I found this lesson in my files, I am not sure who sent it to me, I feel so bad that I don't have a name to go with this, I some how lost the information on who made and sent me this file! But it is a great lesson to give before General Conference. And it has a game with it!
If you know who is responsible for this great lesson or if you are the one who sent it to me or wrote it, please let me know so I can give you feel credit. Thanks Liz
Ideas to involve young children in FHE

Allow your child to practice by giving the opening or closing prayer.
Let your child plan and prepare (help) FHE treats.
Have a singing night -- sing primary songs and teach your child to lead. Play "Name that Tune."
Play children's games such as Hide and Seek or Red Light Green Light.
Go to the zoo or pet store during the day - later have a lesson about the animals seen.
Use pre-made family activity packets with fun lessons and games, and ideas for the whole family.
Join or create a Family Home Evening group where ideas and lesson packets are exchanged. Watch your resources expand!
Write a letter to each member of the family and express the positive things about them.
Put on a family play -- dress up in costumes, videotape it if possible to watch at your next FHE.
Dress up as scripture characters-- play charades to guess who each person it.
Set up a tent and have FHE outside. Make s'mores and have a lesson about nature.
Have a poetry night-- encourage each child to express ideas and feelings in a creative way.
Watch animated church videos.
Have a scavenger hunt at neighbors' homes.
Prepare fun FHE kits that your child can learn to teach from .
Make homemade ice cream.
Play "Mormon Bingo" or "Celestial Pursuit."
Write a letter to a missionary -- have a lesson about missionaries and sing "I Hope they Call Me on a Mission."
Go through old photo albums. Show your child what he looked like as a baby.
Organize a fun chore chart and use chore coupons as incentives. Be creative.
Have a family talent show. Invite a family over.

Every family should hold a family home evening each week. A family may consist of one person or a husband and wife. It may include children and other relatives. Every family, regardless of their circumstances, will be blessed by holding family home evenings. The Church keeps Monday evenings free of other activities so families can be together for family home evening.

The First Presidency said: "We promise you great blessings if you will follow the Lord's counsel and hold regular family home evenings. We pray constantly that parents in the Church will accept their responsibility to teach and exemplify gospel principles to their children. May God bless you to be diligent in this most important responsibility" ("Message from the First Presidency," Family Home Evening Resource Book [1983], iv).
As patriarch of his family, the father presides. He conducts or appoints a family member to conduct the home evening. He teaches the lesson or delegates the teaching to his wife or to children who are old enough to teach. Everyone who is old enough should have opportunities to participate. Younger children can help in such ways as leading music, quoting scriptures, answering questions, holding pictures, passing out refreshments, and praying. In the father's absence, the mother presides.
A suggested outline for family home evening follows:
    Opening song (by the family)
Opening prayer (by a family member)
Poem or scripture reading (by a family member)
Lesson (by the father, mother, or an older child)
Activity (led by a family member and with all family members participating)
    Closing song (by the family)
Closing prayer (by a family member)
    Refreshments
A family can hold home evening in many other ways. Any activity that brings the family together, strengthens their love for each other, helps them draw closer to Heavenly Father, and encourages them to live righteously can be a family home evening. Examples of such activities include reading the scriptures, discussing the gospel, sharing testimonies, doing a service project, singing together, going on a picnic, playing a family game, and hiking. All family home evenings should include prayer.
Family home evening lessons can be based on the scriptures; words of latter-day prophets, particularly general conference addresses; and personal experiences and testimonies. Many lessons should be centered on the birth, life, teachings, and Atonement of the Savior. Gospel Principles, Gospel Fundamentals, and Church magazines contain articles and other information on many subjects that could be part of family home evening lessons.
Suggested discussion topics for home evening follow:
    The plan of salvation
The life and teachings of Jesus
    Repentance
    Prayer
    Fasting
    The Word of Wisdom
    The Lord's standard of morality
    The meaning of the sacrament
    Tithing
    Gratitude
    Honesty
Reverence for God and respect for His creations
Preparing for baptism, priesthood ordination, or marriage
    Preparing to enter the temple
    Reading the scriptures
    Keeping the Sabbath day holy
    Forgiving others
    Gaining and sharing a testimony
    Sharing the gospel with others
    Compiling family histories
    Understanding and accepting death
    Solving family problems
    Managing family finances
    Sharing family household work
    Appreciating and enjoying music
