2006 Oct Conference Summary
For Primary I made a really brief summary of the Oct 06 Conf talks
(minus priesthood) and then also illustrated each of the topics. It
would be useful to use for family nights, primary sharing time, talks or
lessons on conf etc..
I hope some of you can benefit from this.

SUMMARIES OF TALKS —
President Gordon B. Hinckley"Circumstances change, but our
message does not change.
We bear
testimony to the world that the heavens have been opened, that
God our eternal Father, and his son, the risen Lord, have appeared and
spoken."
"In the on-working of
this great cause,
increased faith is
what we most need. Without it the work would stagnate."
We are grateful, We wish
that there were peace
President James E. Faust "The blessings of
discipleship are readily
available to all who are willing to pay the price."
Elder Dallin H. Oaks "The Savior said:
Come unto me, all ye that labour and
are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Elder M. Russell Ballard
Strive to keep life in proper balance when serving the Lord. "As
mortals, we simply cannot do everything at once. Therefore we must do
all things in wisdom and order."
Elder David S. Baxter Latter-day Saints can
feel the Savior's love by
exercising faith, living a life of service and standing steady through
adversity.
Elder Richard H. Winkel
Attending the temple will bring families together both in this
life and in the next.
Elder Paul B. Pieper First-generation members make up more
than half the overall membership of the church.
"Seemingly small, insignificant
decisions will impact past and future generations, as well as your own
life."
Elder Robert C. Oaks "We can only grow in faith if we are
willing to wait patiently for God's purposes and patterns to unfold in
our lives, on his timetable."
Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin "Each of us will have our own
Fridays — those days when the universe itself seems shattered and the
shards of our world lie littered about us in pieces. We will all
experience those broken times where it seems we can never be put
together again. We will all have our Fridays. But I testify to you in
the name of the one who conquered death —
Sunday will come."
Elder Richard G. Scott
Those
who anchor themselves to correct principles and laws ensure their own
safety and success in life. "It is your understanding and
application of the laws of God that will give your life glorious purpose
as you ascend and conquer the difficulties of life."
Elder Robert D. Hales
"The
holy scriptures are the word of God given to us for our salvation.
The scriptures are essential in receiving a testimony of Jesus Christ
and His gospel."
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf
"The testimony of the truthfulness of the restored gospel of Jesus
Christ is the most powerful motivating force in our lives." "A
testimony is a most precious possession because it is not acquired by
logic or reason alone, it cannot be purchased with earthly possessions,
and it cannot be given as a present or inherited from our ancestors. We
cannot depend on the testimonies of other people. We need to know for
ourselves."
Elder Shayne M. Bowen The scriptures teach about
the Atonement of Christ, which
is available to every person. Like
the landfill, which "requires dedicated work and attention,
laboriously applying layer after layer of fill to reclaim the low lying
ground, our lives also require the same vigilance, continually applying
layer after layer of the healing gift of repentance."
Elder Daniel L.
Johnson A "lack of compliance" with the
law of tithing is "not to be taken lightly and can not only
seriously impair our spiritual growth and development but can also limit
the physical and temporal blessings that we could otherwise enjoy."
Sister Elaine S. Dalton President Hinckley counseled Sister
Dalton and her husband when they were married to “Always live in such a
way that when you need the Lord's blessings, you can call upon Him and
receive them because you are
worthy."
President Thomas S. Monson Mortality is a time of testing and
proving. It brings challenges and difficulties. "These can break us, and
the surface of our souls may crack and crumble — that is, if our
foundations of faith, or testimonies of truth, are not deeply imbedded
within us."
Three guidelines can help
in building a strong foundation: prayer, scripture study and service.
Elder L. Tom Perry
"Our Eternal Father did not send us to earth on an aimless, meaningless
journey. He provided for us a
plan to
follow." "Only through the gift of the Atonement and our
obedience to the gospel can we return and live with God once again."
Elder Russell M. Nelson Latter-day Saints "share an enormous
responsibility" to do what the Lord wants them to do. This includes the
gathering of scattered Israel, which is of unique importance in God's
eternal plan.
Through temple and
missionary work, church members are part of the gathering of Israel.
All people can "come unto Christ" and "have equal claim upon the
blessings of the Lord."
Bishop Richard C. Edgley "Sadly, some of the greatest missing
values in today's world are honesty and integrity." "Honesty should be
among the most fundamental values that govern our everyday living. When
we are true to the sacred principles
of
honesty and integrity, we are true to the faith and we are true
to ourselves."
Elder Anthony D. Perkins "Childlike
faith in the perfect love of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ
Five ways are suggested to "more fully feel the tender love of God."
First, people can see themselves as children of a loving Father in
Heaven. Second, church members should also place their burdens on Jesus
Christ, and third, forgive themselves of sins and imperfections. Fourth,
sustain hope of eternal life. And fifth, find joy each day.
Sister Margaret S. Lifferth The scriptures and our prophets
are clear about
what to teach our
children." "Knowing that
we
teach of Christ and his gospel, how do we do it? Begin by
following the counsel of our prophets and making time in our homes for
family prayer, scripture study and family home evening.
President Boyd K. Packer "We speak of the church as our
refuge, our defense.
There is safety
and protection in the church. It centers in the
gospel of Jesus Christ.
Latter-day Saints learn to look within themselves to see the redeeming
power of the Savior of all mankind. The principles of the gospel taught
in the church and learned from the scriptures become a guide for each of
us individually and for our families."
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland
Prophets of God walk on the earth today. "It is no trivial matter
for this church to declare to the world prophecy, seership, and
revelation, but we do declare it. It is true light shining in a dark
world, and it shines from these proceedings."
Elder David A. Bednar "To be offended is a choice we make; it
is not a condition inflicted or imposed upon us by someone or something
else."
Latter-day Saints must follow
the example of Christ and love their enemies. The Lord has the
power to help those who seek Him overcome feelings of hurt or offense.
Elder Craig A. Cardon "So it is that the
priesthood, through the workings
of the spirit,
moves individuals closer
to God through ordination, ordinances, and refinement of
individual natures, thus affording God's children the opportunity to
become like him and live eternally in his presence — a work more
glorious than moving mountains."
Elder Don R. Clarke How do Latter-day Saints
become instruments in God's hands?
"First of all, we must have love for God's children."
Elder Keith R. Edwards The
purpose of our suffering is not always apparent at the time.
"As we are called upon to endure suffering, sometimes inflicted
upon us intentionally or negligently, we are put in a unique position—if
we choose, we may be allowed to have new awareness of the suffering of
the son of God." The scriptures tell the stories of several men and
women who always kept their focus on Christ, no matter how bad their
situation was. People like Abraham, who lost the land of his inheritance
and was commanded to sacrifice his son, Isaac; or Nephi, who was bound
for four days by his brothers on a ship coming to the promised land.
Despite his suffering, Nephi "did look unto God and did praise him all
the day long and did not murmur."
Elder Larry W. Gibbons
"The
only true security in life is living the commandments."
"What a great thing it is to decide once and for all, early in
life, what you will do and what you will not do in regards to honesty,
modesty, chastity, the Word of Wisdom, and temple marriage."
Brother A. Roger Merrill Latter-day Saints often find
themselves spiritually passive at church meetings, thinking, "Here I am,
now inspire me."
"When we
focus instead
on seeking and receiving the spirit,
we become less concerned about a teacher or speaker holding our
attention and more concerned about giving our attention to the spirit."
