Guidelines for Relief Society Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meetings and Activities

Effective January 1, 2006

The purposes of home, family, and personal enrichment are to strengthen faith in Jesus Christ
and to teach parenting and homemaking skills.

Enrichment is a time for sisters to socialize, learn, and be uplifted. The enrichment program includes the following:

. Meetings: Home, family, and personal enrichment meetings held quarterly (rather than monthly) for all sisters.

. Activities: Enrichment activities offered regularly (weekly, monthly, or as determined by ward Relief Society leaders) for sisters with similar needs and interests.

In planning meetings and activities, leaders should (1) consider the needs and interests of sisters in the ward, (2) counsel with priesthood leaders, and (3) plan activities with prayer and purpose (see Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2: Priesthood and Auxiliary Leaders, 222).

Efforts should be made to involve all sisters. If necessary, a children's class should be provided during meetings and activities as outlined in the Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2 on page 202.

Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meetings Ward Enrichment Meetings

Ward Relief Societies should hold four enrichment meetings each year. One of these meetings should be used to commemorate the March 17, 1842, organization of the Relief Society.

The meetings are planned by the home, family, and personal enrichment leader under the direction of the Relief Society presidency. Specialists may be assigned to help (see Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2, 199). A president's report may be part of these meetings.

Enrichment meetings are held at a time other than on Sunday or Monday evening.

Stake Enrichment Meetings

In addition to ward meetings, the stake holds one or two enrichment meetings each year. The stake Relief Society presidency directs these meetings with the assistance of stake specialists, if necessary (see Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2, 196). One of these meetings should be held in conjunction with the annual broadcast of the general Relief Society meeting.

Note: These ward and stake meetings replace ward and stake special events (see Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2, 205).

Enrichment Activities

Enrichment activities are less structured than home, family, and personal enrichment meetings and bring together sisters who have common needs, interests, or circumstances. The activities should offer a safe, relaxed, and engaging environment where sisters learn and share ways to strengthen homes, families, and individuals.

Enrichment activities are planned by the Relief Society presidency; the home, family, and personal enrichment leader; and specialists, as needed.

Leaders should be flexible in planning activities, which may be held in the meetinghouse or other appropriate places as often as needed. For more information about enrichment activities, see Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2, pages 204-5.

Guidelines for Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meeting

Purpose
Guidelines for Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meeting, Purpose

The Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meeting (formerly homemaking meeting) is designed to help sisters build spiritual strength, develop personal skills, strengthen the home and family, and provide gospel service (see Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2: Priesthood and Auxiliary Leaders [1998], 202).
Meeting Format
The Relief Society presidency and the home, family, and personal enrichment leader (formerly homemaking leader) plan the meetings. In addition to the standard format for meetings, the home, family, and personal enrichment meeting should include the following:
1. Relief Society president's report. This could include an update of service opportunities in the ward, illnesses, or other concerns. It might also include non-confidential items from the ward council meeting that the bishop would like all sisters to be aware of that month. The Relief Society president may invite one of her counselors to give the report.
2. Lesson: Topic presentation. This should be a 15-minute presentation on a designated spiritual topic (see "Topic Presentations").
3. Activity Segment. This is a 60- to 90-minute segment of the meeting, during which practical skills that apply to the spiritual topic are taught or service activities are held (see "Activity Segment").
4. Refreshments or light meal (optional).

Topic Presentations
Each home, family, and personal enrichment meeting focuses on a particular topic or gospel principle. Ten suggested topics are provided on the Church's Web site at www.lds.org and in the November 2001 and May 2002 issues of the Ensign. These topics are intended for long-term use and may be adapted to meet local needs.
After prayerfully considering the needs and interests of the sisters in the ward, the ward Relief Society presidency, with the approval of the bishopric, chooses two additional monthly topics and determines the order for presenting the twelve monthly topics during the year.
Activity Segment
The activity segment consists of miniclasses or service activities that relate to the spiritual topic. Suggestions for miniclasses are included with the ten suggested topics (see page 2). The counselor and the leader responsible for the home, family, and personal enrichment meeting should work with the class teachers to plan miniclasses and activities that will be relevant and meaningful for the sisters in the ward or branch.
The suggested miniclasses are examples of skills that should be taught. They may be adapted to meet the needs of individual units. Leaders should be certain that the miniclasses adhere to the topic and teach skillsincluding homemaking artsthat will help bring love, harmony, spirituality, security, and stability into the home. A variety of classes or approaches should be offered to meet the needs and interests of all sisters.
Effective Teaching
Teachers and leaders should consider the instructions on teaching the gospel in section 16 of the Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2, pages 300-306, to guide them in preparing presentations and activities

Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meetings
From the Relief Society General Presidency
"Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meetings," Ensign, Sept. 2000, 70
The work that women do in their homes and with their family members is vital. Whether young or old, single or married, women strengthen homes, families, and communities in significant ways. To help sisters make their unique contributions, Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment meeting was implemented last January.
The focus of these meetings is to help sisters build spiritual strength, develop personal skills, strengthen the home and family, and serve others, while developing bonds of sisterhood. We are pleased as sisters from around the world tell us of the growth and enrichment they have experienced from this new focus. And for many ward and branch leaders, the change has provided an opportunity to evaluate what has been done in the past and determine ways to encourage and inspire sisters in the future.
As these changes are implemented, it is a good time for each of us to ask: Am I learning to love my Relief Society sisters? Am I thinking of ways I can help them? Am I supporting and sustaining my leaders? Do I attend my meetings in a spirit of love and learning so I can glean the most from what has been planned? How can I participate and contribute more?
As the Church moves forward, we sisters need to move with it. We need to make sure the challenges of living in the world will not keep us from what matters most. Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment meetings will help us focus our efforts. They will help us become better disciples of Jesus Christ.
Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meetings*
"Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Meetings," Ensign, May 2002, 102
When planning home, family, and personal enrichment meetings, carefully assess the needs of the sisters. When applicable, make certain these meetings include classes that help develop skills in parenting and family relations. The Family Guidebook (31180) and Marriage and Family Relations Instructor's Manual (35865) may be used as resources. These are available through Church distribution centers.

Enrichment Activities
With the approval of the bishopric and the Relief Society presidency, the counselor assigned to homemaking may plan enrichment activities to help fulfill the interests of sisters and the purpose and objectives of Relief Society. Specialists may be assigned to help (see page 199). These activities do not take the place of Sunday Relief Society meetings or homemaking meetings.
Enrichment activities may be attended by groups who have a common interest. They may be held weekly, monthly, or at other frequencies. They may be held at the meetinghouse, the home of a member, )r some other appropriate place.
They may include spiritual activities that build faith in Jesus Christ and strengthen families, such as temple attendance and family history service.
They may include educational activities that teach sisters about personal and family preparedness, selfreliance, homemaking, parenting, and other skills.
They may include cultural activities that allow sisters to enjoy art, music, or literature or to study and )reserve their heritage.
They may include social activities that strengthen sisterhood, including service activities such as welfare projects.
They may include recreational activities that provide opportunities for fun, relaxation, or exercise. These might include handicrafts, sports, or walking. For additional suggestions and guidelines for acivities, see The Activity Book.

This guide line is what Craft Days fall under, to read about the cost dealing with Craft days read below.

Special Events (Page 205) / Craft Day and RS Birthday
Special events are held to respond to the needs and interests of sisters, develop sisterhood, and provide cultural, spiritual, educational, and social enrichment. Two events each year are suggested for ward Relief Societies. One or two events each year are suggested for stake Relief Societies.

Relief Society special events can be fairs, seminars, concerts, women's meetings, or socials. One event should commemorate the organization of the Relief Society on 17 March 1842.
The Relief Society presidency directs these events. The activities committee may be a resource. Specialists may be assigned to help (see pages 196, 199).

Relief Society Policies and Guidelines on Finances (pg 206)

Leaders ensure that stake and ward Relief Society finances are used according to the current budget and finance policies of the Church. The following principles apply.

Stake or ward budget allowance funds should be used to pay for all Relief Society activities, programs, and supplies, including costs for teaching supplies, special events (two per year), homemaking refreshments or light meals, and supplies for the children's class. Members should not pay fees to participate. Nor should they provide materials, supplies, rental or admission fees, or long-distance transportation at their own expense (exceptions are made for materials for personal homemaking projects, as explained below). Activities in which many members provide food may be held if they do not place undue burdens on members.

Activities should be simple and have little or no cost. They should not involve travel that could impose a hardship. This may require a reduction in some activities that stakes and wards are accustomed to having.
Expenditures must be approved by the stake presidency or bishopric before they are incurred. No fund-raising may be conducted.
Sisters should buy scriptures for their own use. They also pay for materials used for personal projects in homemaking meetings. Each homemaking meeting should include at least one class or activity that is without cost.

Ideas for a  Enrichment evening about music
Thanks to Cathy in England is letting me share this idea with you!

I used it in the Feb. Enrichment evening. I decorated the room with Big Red love heart shaped balloons which i got cheep, i filled them with helium and placed them around the room. they got to take them home at the end. then we played that game. the lesson was on how to love yourself then others around you. we then made little gifts to give to a friend. it was tissue paper from a card store that had love hearts on it I put 3 Hershey kisses in and tied with ribbon with a card saying. ... a gift of love just for you. It was all done so simple. 22 sisters were there that evening and when I came to church on the Sunday all they could say was how much they had enjoyed the evening.

In Feb. this year I had looked in the hymn book and taken a few words from  a  sentence that had love in it and had a quiz. they had to guess the title of  the hymn then turn to the page. run up to the teacher who was doing the game ready for the next clue. it was such a scream. you do have to have at least one  person who is familiar with the hymns to encourage the others to find the song  and page. Here is what I did.

1. loves redeeming work is done. =200
2..His love is great he died for us. = 65
3. come to the feast of love, come ever knowing. = 115
4. his love will find you, and gently greet you. = 117
5 oh, what love will then bare sway. = 58
6. his love and grace adore, who all our sorrows bore. = 67
7. partake the emblems of his death and thus renewed our love and faith. =  117/116
8. keep loves banner floating. = 152
9. and lead them to Zion in love. = 6
10. teach us tolerance and love. = 223
11. the love that filled the courts. = 195
12. and god will love and bless you. = 226
13 i love beautiful gates. = 44
14. he should extend his great love. = 193
15. lover of my soul. = 102
16. and loves me to the end. 136
17. a pleasure to serve thee, and love to obey. = 19
18 truth and love we hear from day today. = 271.

Put each song on a strip of paper. Without the number on of course. put all  strips in a bag. You need a bag for each team. if you have 3 teams then you
need  to do three lots of strips.
Make sure you have the answers close at hand.
Only one member of each team should come to you with an answer to the slip  of paper. Remember who's bag is who's. Once they have given you a correct
answer  they can pick a different slip. The team that finishes there bag first is the  winner.
I hope that wasn't too confusing. You may find it easier to work in  colours.

Gift wrapped squares of wood. It seemed like it was a full package, but it  just wood.
Then hook this poem to it.

Here's the poem that I have:
This is a very special gift
That you can never see.
The reason it's so special
"Cause it's for you from me.
Whenever you need caring
or are ever feeling blue,
You only have to hold this gift
And know we think of you.
You never can unwrap it.
Please leave the ribbon tied.
Just hold the box close to your heart
It's filled with love inside.

When I started my calling as Enrichment Counselor, our numbers were very low too. I found that if I keep announcing our activities and do lots of handouts and posters, the sisters are well-informed and more likely to remember to come to HFPE. I also go out of my way to make sure the sisters in Primary and YW are well informed by handing their invites personally to them.  And I also e mail the sisters ahead of time for an extra reminder.  I do handouts that are fun and sometimes add candy to "bribe" them to come!   I will list below some cute ways to use candy etc. in your handouts...there is even one for the husbands or family members!  From Leanne In Michigan
Here are some handouts with candy:
( Small Reeses Peanut Butter Cups )  We're just " NUTTY " about Enrichment Night!
( Any small treat )  " TREAT " yourself to a wonderful evening.  Come to HFPE Night!
( Hershey Kisses )  " KISS " your worries goodbye and come to Enrichment Night!
( You may also wish to change it using the words : Family, Housework etc. )
( Hershey Kisses )  " KISS " your wife ( mother, grandmother etc. ) goodbye and send her to HFPE night!  ( Give these to husbands or other family members & you can use Hershey Hugs also and adapt wording )
( Fancy Chocolates )  " INDULDGE "  in fun......Come to Enrichment Night!
( For self reliance & emergency preparedness:  Life Saver candy )
This Enrichment Night may be a " LIFESAVER "
( Suckers )  We're " SUCKERS " for a great Enrichment Night!
( Riesen candy )  Top 10 " RIESENS "  to come to Enrichment night!  (List 10 reasons that relate to the topic of the class.)
( Small baggie of popcorn )  "POP" on over to Enrichment this month!

Celestial Water
I used it during an Enrichment night that had the topic of Cultural Arts, and we used the theme of flying to our countries spotlighted... the directions for Water Bottle Labels would be. Print, Cut (Leave one white edge on the width side, to make it easier to attach) Glue white edge (I recommend using a dryer glue or possible double stick tape -something like Elmer's or a glue stick even might not hold, without you holding it in place until it dries), Wrap around 1/2 pint water bottles (the same size the have on airplanes)
Thanks Trudy Montgomery for another GREAT IDEA!!
