2008 Mutual Theme

The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve have approved the following as the Mutual theme for 2008:

"Be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works"

Mosiah 5:15

Crystals and Cateyes STARS:

I chose the stars to go with the theme for 2008, I got the idea from emails I read and Jenny Phillips song Like a Star see more info at this link www.jennyphillips.com

What does Mosiah 5:15 mean

Taken from an article in the Jan 2008 New Era

Therefore, I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his, that you may be brought to heaven, that ye may have everlasting salvation and eternal life, through the wisdom, and power, and justice, and mercy of him who created all things, in heaven and in earth, who is God above all. Amen.

Steadfast

Stead means place; it is related to the word stand. Fast means fixed or firm; think of the word fasten. So, steadfast means something like “standing firmly in place.”

Immovable

“Those who stand firm, steadfast, and immovable are given great inner hidden powers and unseen strengths. They will be endowed with full and potent spiritual resources.”

President James E. Faust (1920–2007), Second Counselor in the First Presidency, “Stand Up and Be Counted,” New Era, Aug. 1990, 6.

Abounding

Abounding—having in large numbers or great quantity

Good Works

How can your life be “always abounding in good works”? Here are a few ideas:

• Pray for opportunities to serve others, and then look for those opportunities.

• Write in your journal each day the things you did that were kind, helpful, or spiritually uplifting.

• On a Sunday, make a list of good things you think you could accomplish that week. Put the list where you can see it every day to remind yourself of your goals, and then review the list on the following Sunday to see how you did.

Good Works

“When faith springs up in the heart, good works will follow, and good works will increase that pure faith within them.”

President Brigham Young (1801–77), Teachings of the Presidents of the Church:Brigham Young (1997), 57.

Omnipotent

Omnipotent—all-powerful

Seal you his

In ancient times, a seal (usually a signet ring or small stone with writing on its surface) was pressed into soft clay or wax to leave a mark of ownership or authenticity on an object or document. King Benjamin used this image in Mosiah 5 after discussing how we can become the children of Christ and take upon us His name through covenant (like we do when we are baptized or partake of the sacrament). He then says that our faith and good works will enable Christ to “seal [us] his.” The Apostle Paul taught that the Holy Spirit gives us this seal of approval (see 2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13; 4:30).

Be Immovable

Hi, my name is Shannon Grogan and I am the president of the Canyon Springs ward in the Moreno Valley CA stake and we have come up with a wonderful idea to go with the theme.
Shield of FaithThe phrase "Be immovable" has been ringing in our minds and we came across this picture called "The Shield of Faith" by Judy Cooley. They also have a boy version of the picture. It said everything that we want our girls to know and understand for this year, and goes perfectly with the theme. "Be immovable" and have the armor of God on. We put the picture on canvas and made a walling hanging. We will give them to the girls at New Beginnings. The keynote speaker will be giving their talk based on this picture as well. And then throughout the year we will be using President Hinckleys Standing for Something for our spiritual thoughts and mini lessons. And then for our joint YW activities we are going to be picking apart the armor of God and having the activities based on a different part each month. We will need to repeat, but we are finding that this is a lot of fun to do! For example, one of our activities is based on Feet shod with the Gospel of Peace, so we are going tracking one night with the Sister Missionaries and of course, the girls can also pass this off as a value experience. And we will be doing a lot of different types of service. One idea...We are making homemade dog biscuits and taking them to the place where they train the dogs to lead blind people. We are trying to think out of the box this year for service ideas. I like that this picture tells the girls to stand up for what is right, be strong, be prayerful, be humble. Our YW today need to believe this. I hope that we will accomplish this, this year.

MORE INFO:  I have a picture for you to post if you want to of our gift that we gave to our girls. I sent you four pictures, knowing you only needed one, but I wasn't sure which one would post better. I took a 5x5 canvas they can be found at Micheals or Joanns for about $2.00 on sale. I lucked out and raided their dollar bins and found them for $1. You can also take blocks of wood and have the same look. It will just sit on a desk instead of hanging on a wall. I  painted them and then took Old World type paper that pulled the red out of the picture. And then matted it and cut strips of paper, it looks like ribbon, both would work. Paper is cheaper. I took a fllower and put a brad in the center to finish it off and gold velum to put the theme on. They are simple, but really pretty. I had to make 30 of them, it took my presidency about 1 hour to complete them once everything was prepped...about 8 hours total for 30. Only due to drying time.
Our New Beginnings was a huge success and was a very spiritual night. The girls were so excited about their gift. Now they can see it on a daily basis and be reminded to Be Immovable. Also, we are making journals for them that will have this picture on the cover...I will send it to you as soon as they are made.

Thank you Shannon for sharing this GREAT idea!!
