What Is Young Women in Excellence?

Young Women in Excellence is a celebration of Personal Progress at which young women share a Value Experience or Value Project they have completed during the year. It is usually held during Mutual at the ward level, but it may be held at the stake level.

Why Do We Have Young Women in Excellence?

The purposes of Young Women in Excellence include the following:

  • Help acquaint parents with the Personal Progress and Young Women programs.
  • Give recognition to each young woman and help her recognize the value of Personal Progress in her life.
  • Share the vision of Personal Progress with parents.

When Is Young Women in Excellence Held?

Young Women in Excellence is a culminating event held toward the end of each year. The date and plans should be announced early in the year.

Who Is Invited to Young Women in Excellence?

Young women, their parents, and priesthood and Young Women leaders are invited to Young Women in Excellence.

How Do We Plan Young Women in Excellence?

Adult leaders work with young women to plan Young Women in Excellence.

At the beginning of the year, leaders encourage each young woman to give serious thought to which value she might focus on for this event. She may work with a family member, another young woman, or a specialist on her project, which may take several months to complete.

At the event, young women share a Value Experience or Value Project they have completed during the year that exhibits excellence. The event could include talents and skills young women have developed through working on Personal Progress during the past year.

Some of these ideas were submitted by Sharma Worthen Anderson who has come to our rescue again, with all of these great ideas that she has saved and collected though the years.

Many have asked if I have more info on some of this ideas, I wish I could help, unfortunate these ideas are ones that Sharma sent to me, I don't have any other information or email address to the people responsible from the start! She gather these ideas form email lists she was on over the years.

Other ideas

Let me share with you some themes that have been great successes in my wards:

1. FEED MY SHEEP - we dressed in overalls and decorated with flannel shirts on a clothesline. Featured a picture of "The Shepherd". Sang  a song, also called "Feed My Sheep", with a strong message of love.  In prep for this, we did secret sisters in our ward, and learned to make friendship bracelets.

2. SEEDS OF EXCELLENCE - Cute invitation is a seed packet. The special music was a two part song for Mothers and Daughters. Very tender.

3. SISTERS ACROSS THE WORLD - SO much fun to dress up! True stories from New Era - we are a worldwide church!

4. A FAMILY FOREVER

5. THE LORD IS MY LIGHT - had everyone bring flashlights for a special object lesson...

6. RAINBOW OF VALUES

7. THE GAME OF LIFE - Oh, this was so cool! I taped off the carpet in the cultural hall with white duct tape to look exactly like a football field. It was amazing! Every class did a cheer:  "We are the Beehives and we're here to say Get on your knees, and pray, pray, pray!..."  The young women sang a powerful testimony building song, "When He
Calls Me" written by Rebekah Lowe, based on the last testament of Elder Bruce R. McConkie.

8. You get the idea!! Prayerfully consider your young women's particular needs. That's how SEEDS OF EXCELLENCE came about.  Involving the mothers was such a blessing - both for the young women and for the moms.

I feel one of the most important things you can do is to feature the girls - do this event WITH them, not FOR them.  The church handbook specifically suggests several things to be included, including a special musical presentation, which can be the perfect way to involve every single girl.

One more idea: when parents and girls first arrive, I really like to have something for them to get involved in right away. (I call it an introductory activity.) For example, for a program we did called  HEARTS KNIT IN LOVE, we had the girls make old-fashioned valentine (collage) shoeboxes, which were part of the personal display. They turned out unique and darling of course. As parents and girls arrived for the event, everyone was given little cards to write notes of appreciation for their daughter and others. Another
example: for the FAMILY FOREVER event, I made up a humorous quiz that families could work on together while waiting for the evening to begin. For SISTERS ACROSS THE WORLD I had a world map and little pin flag markers for people to place in a place where they had a connection (mission, ancestor, etc). That was amazing - everyone was
really into it!

There are several books with helps and ideas: Bright Impressions "Under Construction" is one program, "Value-able Ideas" is a book with another planned event.  I co-authored a book with Rebekah Lowe with 10 different programs (including sheet music for songs) called "10 TERRRIFIC PROGRAMS for New Beginnings & Young Women in Excellence". I am positive there are many more ideas here in the archives and files.

Good luck and have fun! No pressure, but this should be the highlight of the year for the young women and their parents ;-)
