Computer and Internet Tips
|
The following
are tips and suggestions that I use or have found helpful, so I
thought I would share them with others. Maybe nothing will help or
maybe something will help! But I have had a lot of people
ask different things, so I thought I would share some of the
"little" bit that I do know! Trust me, it is a little bit! |
|
Print so page is a poster size |
| Of
course open the page / file you want to print to a
poster size, in the PDF window click the "print"
button, in the next window click "Properties", then
click the tab that says "Page Setup" then in that
window, look for where it says "Printing type" use the
drop down window and change it to "Poster Printing",
then click "ok" --- "ok" again. Make sure you have
the paper you want already loaded (colored paper, card
stock, etc) That should do it!
ONE THING, this
does not work on all printers, you have to have a
printer that will print posters, banners, etc. |

My thoughts on printer
ink and printing in color: |
|
I wanted to give you
a little food for thought, as you will be able to see, I
love COLOR. When I make flyers, newsletters, or
invitations I print everything in color. I would rather
have things done, then have to run down to the copy
center or wait until Sunday morning and make
copies. However, I know a lot of people say, "color
cartridges are to expensive", well I say "It does not
have to be".
You can buy ink
cartridges for so much cheaper online then if you
buy them at Costco or anywhere else. For example, I was
buying mine at Sam's Club, I paid about $40.00 for one
Black, Cyan, Magenta Yellow cartridge, so that was
basically 10.00 a cartridge. Now I pay anywhere form
$3.10 - 4.25 a cartridge depending on how many I buy. A
lot of times shipping is free or it is still small
enough, you are still paying less.
I buy
my ink from:
MARLBOROUGH SUPPLIES FOR PRINTERS, COPIERS AND FAX
MACHINES
Another thing, the
next time you are buying a printer, buy one that has 4
separate tanks, meaning don't buy one that has just
black and color cartridges. If you print something in
color and it has mainly yellow in it, you will run out
of the yellow ink a lot faster, your color cartridge
will need to be replaced, because you will be out of
yellow, but you might still have a ton of the other
colors. If you buy a printer with separate tanks then
you only replace the color you need.
Also, just because
your printer says you are "out of ink", it may really
not be. I can easily get another 100 pages out of a
cartridge that says it is out of ink; just click the
refresh button on your printer and keep on printing! |

Overtyping
In many programs, pressing the insert key turns on an "overtype mode".
In this mode, what you type replaces the test in the
document instead of pushing it over.
The insert key is a toggle key, which means that pressing it once turns
it on, pressing it again turns it off.

Excel Viewer
|
A lot of
people do not have Excel, but they get things sent to
them, but can not open them, or they try to open some
things on the Internet that are in Excel, but can't.
BUT, you can download an Excel Viewer, which will allow
you to open any Excel file. You can view it and print
from it, but can not edit it! To get this download

Larger Fonts on
Web Pages
If you have a
scroll wheel on your mouse, then hold down the "CTRL"
button and use your scroll button to make the font on
the web page bigger or smaller. |

Have you ever found yourself
on the internet when suddenly a full screen advertisement pops up and you
can't find the X to close it?
I hate it when a web site tries to trap me with a full screen page with no
visible way to close the page.
With this tip, you won't be stuck again. Simply click once on the
offending page, then hold down the "Alt" key on your keyboard
and press the "F4" key. This will close the window that you just
clicked on.
To help you remember, just write Alt+F4 on a sticky note and stick it on
your monitor.

When you see a graphic on the Web site that you must send to a friend
right away press CTRL+ M, than drag and drop the graphic. This immediately
opens a New Message Composition window. Now grab the image and drop it
into the message body. That’s it - address and send the message as you
would normally.

Back
to Desktop
|
Want to quickly get back to the desktop when you have
multiple windows open?
Just press the Windows key on
your keyboard and the letter D.
The Windows key is on the
bottom row of your keyboard between the Ctrl and Alt
keys. It has the Windows symbol on it.
To bring the windows back
up to the way they were before, just press the same key
combination again. |

Favorites
in Alphabetical Order for XP
You can put your Internet Explorer favorites
in alphabetical order in Windows XP the same way you can in Windows 98 and
ME.
Open Internet Explorer.
Click on "Favorites" in the menu
bar. (This will not work if you use Favorites in the toolbar.)
When your list of favorites drops down from
the menu bar, right click on any one of the shortcuts and then click
"Sort by Name". |
|
|
A fast way to add a web page
to your favorites, or bookmarks (depending on what browser you use) is to
hold down the CTRL key and press the D key once. Go ahead and give it a
try. This page should now be in your Favorites!

One of the free software programs that I use quite often
is WordWeb. It is a nice little dictionary program. I
used it to figure out the correct spelling of several
words in this week's issue. WordWeb has definitions,
synonyms, related words and if you want; it will install
an icon of itself in MS Word.
I just keep a shortcut for
WordWeb in my Quick Launch Toolbar where it is always
handy when I need it.
